Going Back to School as an Older Student

    Going back to school as an older student can feel exciting, intimidating, and overwhelming all at the same time. You may wonder if you are too old, whether you will fit in with younger students, or whether you can balance school with all the responsibilities you already have. The truth is that there is no expiration date on your dreams. Education is an opportunity that can be pursued at any stage of life.

    Returning to school later in life often comes with something younger students may not have experience. You already understand responsibility, commitment, and the importance of working toward something that matters to you. You may have experienced setbacks, raised a family, worked a career, or spent years taking care of everyone else. Those experiences can actually make you a stronger and more determined student.

    One of the biggest challenges can be getting back into the habit of studying. Technology, assignments, exams, and online learning may look different than they did years ago. It is okay to give yourself time to adjust. Ask questions, use tutoring services, communicate with your professors, and take advantage of the resources your school provides.

    Another important lesson is to stop comparing your journey to anyone else's. Someone else's timeline does not determine yours. You may take one class at a time, attend school part time, or need to pause occasionally because life happens. Progress is still progress.

    Going back to school can also teach you something beyond what is written in a textbook. It can remind you that you are capable of learning new things, overcoming challenges, and accomplishing goals that once seemed out of reach.

    If you have been thinking about returning to school, don't allow your age to convince you that your opportunity has passed. Whether you are pursuing a certificate, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or something beyond that, your dream is still worth pursuing. You are not starting over. You are starting from experience and sometimes, that is the greatest advantage of all.
